Downtown Corpus Christi is kicking off the holiday season on Friday, November 6, with the Port of Corpus Christi Holiday Tree Lighting at Artesian Park.

The tree is scheduled to light up at 7 p.m. during First Friday ArtWalk, which runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and features local art, music, food trucks, vendors, and festive activities.

Visitors can also enjoy photos with Santa and the opening of Artesian Park Winter Wonderland, a seasonal light display expected to continue through November and December.

Bring family or friends, arrive before the lighting, and leave time to explore nearby downtown businesses.

parking can get a little tricky around Artesian Park when there is a big event, go early or be ready to walk a bit

Tip of The Day

Beat the Heat Like a Local in Corpus Christi

If you're spending time in Corpus Christi, skip the crowded waterfront during peak afternoon sun and head instead to the shaded back bays on the north side of the city near Oso Bay. Locals kayak or wade-fish there in the early morning when water temperatures are cooler, the wind is calmer, and the redfish and speckled trout are most active near the grass flats. You'll avoid the jet-ski traffic of the main ship channel and get a quieter, more authentic slice of Coastal Bend life.

Practical tip: bring a long-sleeve sun shirt and polarized sunglasses rather than relying solely on sunscreen — the UV reflection off the shallow bay water is intense even before 9 a.m., and polarized lenses let you spot fish (and stingrays to shuffle-step around) well before you're standing on top of them.

Corpus Christi residents can clear out unwanted trash closer to home when the Litter Critter program visits the Southside on Saturday, November 14, 2026.

The drop-off will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial High School parking lot at 3750 Cimarron Boulevard.

Residents must unload their own items, so anyone bringing something heavy or awkward should plan to bring help.

The monthly program brings trash drop-off opportunities to different parts of Corpus Christi, offering an alternative to a trip to a collection center.

Accepted materials were not specified in the event details, so residents should check before loading anything they are unsure about.

For Southside households ready to reclaim space in a garage or storage area, the six-hour stop offers a convenient time to get started.

San Antonio Zoo is offering free admission to eligible service members through November as part of its returning Zoo Salutes program.

The offer includes active-duty personnel, retirees, veterans, and National Guard and Reserve members.

Up to four immediate family members can get half-price tickets when they visit with an eligible service member.

Tickets must be purchased online before the visit, and service members must show a valid military ID at the entrance.

Family tickets must be used that same day, and the offer cannot be combined with other discounts.

Families visiting on or after November 14 can also enjoy Zoo Lights, with colorful displays, glowing tunnels and seasonal music included with zoo admission.

In Military City, the offer gives families a more affordable way to spend a day together.

Does anyone know if the free admission covers the whole day including any special exhibits or just general admission? Trying to plan ahead.

Interesting Facts

Corpus Christi sits at a fascinating crossroads of history, geography, and culture — and most people barely scratch the surface of what makes it remarkable.

  • A city born from a battle date: The bay was named Corpus Christi — Latin for "Body of Christ" — by Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda, who mapped it on the Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi in 1519, making the city's name a direct artifact of the liturgical calendar.
  • Selena's hometown legacy runs deep: Corpus Christi is the birthplace of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, and the city maintains a life-size bronze statue of her on the waterfront. The local airport was also formally renamed Corpus Christi International Airport — Selena's name appears in several official civic dedications citywide.
  • A hidden wind-energy giant: The region around Corpus Christi is one of the windiest urban corridors in the United States, and South Texas as a whole ranks among the top wind-energy-producing areas in the country, quietly making the area a cornerstone of American renewable power generation.
  • Mustang Island's wild horse mystery: The barrier island just offshore is named for the feral mustangs that once roamed it — horses believed to have swum ashore from Spanish shipwrecks in the 1500s and lived wild on the island for centuries before the population eventually died out.
  • An inland sea effect: Corpus Christi Bay is so shallow — averaging only about 12 feet deep — that engineers must continuously dredge a shipping channel to allow the deep-draft vessels serving one of the busiest U.S. ports for crude oil exports to pass through at all.

Corpus Christi families can catch a free outdoor screening of A Bug’s Life at Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Hosted by the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department, Cinema in the Park runs from 6:30 to 8:05 in the evening at 2446 North Oso Parkway.

The preserve offers a fitting backdrop for a movie about tiny creatures finding their way in a big world.

Space is limited, so organizers encourage families to arrive early and bring lawn chairs or blankets for a comfortable spot.

Leave tents at home, though leashed pets are welcome.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase, making it easy to settle in for a relaxed night under the sky.
